for your own protection is a meditation on the legacies and aesthetics of Black masculine cultural production. This exploration of collective care, joy, rage and survival amongst black men confronts accounts of intimacy, brotherhood, rivalry, HIV+ and encouragement. Eponymously inspired by poet-activist, Essex Hemphill, the work underscores the basketball court as the black man’s dominion and the world a battlefield -out of bounds.
